Join Team4NC for a fundraising party in support of three extraordinary Democratic challengers for one of the most strategically important state legislatures in America: Sydney Batch, Rachel Hunt, and Erica McAdoo.
If 2018 is going to be a wave election, these are the candidates who will be its leading edge. And, if you want to see something more than a wave – if you really want to turn the tide in America – then there is no better place to throw your support than behind these brilliant emerging progressive leaders.
This is going to be a terrific party, and a chance to meet all three of these amazing candidates.
As the 2018 midterm elections grow near, we have reached a critical moment in the national struggle against gerrymandering and voter suppression.
On April 10, Team4NC, in partnership with the NYU School of Law chapter of the American Constitution Society, will host a panel discussion at NYU to assess the current landscape and explore strategies for moving forward in the fight for voting rights and fair elections.
Panelists will include:
- Irving Joyner, Professor of Law at North Carolina Central University and the Legal Counsel and Chairperson of the Legal Redress Committee of the North Carolina State Branches of the NAACP
- David Daley, Senior Fellow at FairVote, former Editor-in-Chief of Salon, and the author of the national bestseller Ratf**ked, The True Story Behind the Secret Plan to Steal America’s Democracy
- Kareem Crayton, an influential scholar specializing in the relationship between race and politics in representative institutions, and Executive Director of the Southern Coalition for Social Justice – an organization which has helped drive the fight for voting rights and fair elections in North Carolina.
- Marissa Goldfaden Bleier holds a J.D. from CUNY School of Law and works primarily on low-income tenants' cases. She is also the Social Media Director for Spread The Vote, a non-profit organization helping marginalized people in voter ID states to obtain government-issued ID at no cost.
- Paul Curtis is a co-founder and co-coordinator of Team4NC, which works to encourage donations of time, money, and expertise on behalf of voting rights and civil rights organizations in North Carolina.
Join us to discuss the latest political developments and the status of the key court cases. What can we learn from the experience of advocates in states like North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Washington? How have gerrymandering and voter suppression impacted communities of color in particular? How can we take the initiative nationally not merely to defend, but to expand our democracy?
Further panelists and moderator to be announced.
Free for students. $20 general public - all funds raised will benefit the North Carolina NAACP.
Tickets available here.

Fight back against voter suppression!
Join us in calling on-the-ground volunteers for the organization You Can Vote to let them know about upcoming voter training sessions. You can RSVP below.
You Can Vote is a non-partisan grassroots coalition working to inform citizens of their right to vote and to help them overcome perceived barriers to voting in North Carolina. They train and mobilize volunteers to educate, register, and empower all North Carolina citizens to successfully cast their ballots. Volunteers learn best practices on voter registration and engagement to help citizens navigate North Carolina voting requirements.
Last year, a federal court struck down North Carolina's Voter ID law, saying it "target[ed] African-Americans with almost surgical precision." A new voter ID measure may be introduced in advance of 2018 elections.
We will be getting together at The Commodore, a North Carolina-themed bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to call volunteers and let them know about upcoming You Can Vote trainings. Stick around afterwards for drinks and socializing with Team4NC!
Monday, August 28
5-8 p.m. - phone banking
8 p.m. - drinks & hang with Team4NC

Please join Team4NC on June 14 to benefit Democracy North Carolina, and lend your support to the activists working to return this beautiful state to a model for how democracy can fight back. Featuring a live performance by Jon Lindsay of the NC Music Love Army!
Democracy North Carolina is a nonpartisan nonprofit that uses research, organizing, and advocacy to increase voter participation, reduce the influence of big money in politics, and achieve a government that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people. Democracy NC's network of paid field staff and thousands of volunteers successfully mobilizes voters - especially women, people of color, and young voters - and defends voting rights in North Carolina.
Jon Lindsay has been described by Paste Magazine as “one of the most exciting artists we’ve seen come out of the burgeoning southeastern lo-fi revival scene.” He is the co-founder, with Whiskeytown’s Caitlin Cary, of NC Music Love Army, a collective of prominent NC-based artists united in defense of American democracy.
We hope you’ll join us on June 14! RSVP here.
